Body Mass Index (BMI)
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. It is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight and assess potential health risks associated with underweight, overweight, or obesity.
How to Calculate BMI
The BMI is calculated using the following formula:
BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) × height (m))
Or, if using pounds and inches:
BMI = (weight (lb) / (height (in) × height (in))) × 703
BMI Categories
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obese |
Limitations of BMI
- BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes may have high BMI but low body fat.
- It may not be accurate for older adults or children.
- Does not account for distribution of fat, which can affect health risks.
Why BMI Matters
Maintaining a healthy BMI is associated with lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, and other health conditions. It's a quick screening tool, but should be considered along with other measurements and clinical assessments.
