Ideal Body Weight Calculator
Ideal body weight is a statistical estimate of a healthy body weight based on height. It was originally developed for clinical use — particularly for medication dosing — rather than as a fitness goal.
Formulas
Devine (1974)
The most widely cited IBW formula in medical literature.
Men: IBW = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Women: IBW = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Robinson (1983)
Men: IBW = 52 + 1.9 × (height in inches − 60)
Women: IBW = 49 + 1.7 × (height in inches − 60)
Miller (1983)
Men: IBW = 56.2 + 1.41 × (height in inches − 60)
Women: IBW = 53.1 + 1.36 × (height in inches − 60)
Hamwi (1964)
Men: IBW = 48 + 2.7 × (height in inches − 60)
Women: IBW = 45.5 + 2.2 × (height in inches − 60)
Limitations
IBW formulas do not account for age, frame size, muscle mass, or ethnicity. A bodybuilder and a sedentary person of the same height will have the same IBW — which highlights why it should not be used as a rigid target.
